Students failing any of the 3 compulsory subjects in Class 10 will now have the option to replace it with a skill subject and the result of Class X Board examination will be computed accordingly
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a progressive policy change in its curriculum for the academic year 2024-25. This change aims to support students who face challenges in traditional subjects like Science, Mathematics, and Social Science by providing them with an alternative route to demonstrate their skills and abilities.
Key highlights of the new CBSE Secondary Curriculum 2024-25 are:
- Option to Replace Compulsory Subjects: Students failing in any of the three compulsory subjects (Science, Mathematics, and Social Science) in Class 10 will have the option to replace the failed subject with a skill subject. If a student passes in the skill subject offered as the sixth optional subject, it will replace the failed subject, and the Class X Board examination result will be computed accordingly.
- Language Subject Replacement: If a student fails in any language subject among the first five subjects they take, it can be substituted with the language they have chosen as either the sixth subject (if no skill subjects are offered) or the seventh subject (if optional). This substitution is valid only if the student has passed this language subject, and either Hindi or English remains as a passed language among the first five subjects.
- Language Study Requirement: All students are expected to have studied three languages up to Class VIII. Students who couldn’t clear the third language by the end of Class IX may be given another opportunity in Class X.
- Exemption for Children with Special Needs: Children with special needs (CWSN) are exempted from studying the third language.
- List of Skill Subjects: The curriculum introduces various skill subjects that students can opt for as the sixth optional subject. These skill subjects include:
Retail Store Operations Assistant, Information Technology, Security, Automotive, Introduction to Financial Markets, Introduction to Tourism, Beauty and Wellness, Agriculture, Food Production, Front Office Operations, Banking and Operations, Marketing and Sales, Health Care, Apparel, Multi-Media, Multi Skill Foundation Course, Artificial Intelligence, Physical Activity Trainer (New), Data Science, Electronics and Hardware (New), Foundation Skills for Sciences, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology) (New), and Design Thinking and Innovation (New)
This innovative policy change by CBSE provides flexibility and opportunities for students to explore and excel in areas beyond traditional academic subjects. It acknowledges the diverse talents and interests of students and aims to support their holistic development by integrating skill-based learning into the mainstream curriculum.
