BJP Selects Basavaraj Bommai as Karnataka CM to Replace BS Yediyurappa

Bengaluru: Basavaraj Bommai, has been selected for the next Karnataka Chief Minister, after the resignation of BS Yediyurappa who announced his resignation on Monday after weeks of speculation.

Basavaraj Bommai, the current state Home Minister, an MLA from central Karnataka’s Haveri district, is a Lingayat and the term ‘Basava’ also means ox in Kannada, it strongly resonates with the name of Basaveshwara, the 12th-century founder of the community.  

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai (born 28 January 1960) is an Indian and engineer. He is a 3-times Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Shiggaon since 2008.

He was earlier the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Legislature of Karnataka. He also served as Haveri and Udupi District Incharge Minister. He previously served as Minister for Water Resources and Cooperation.

He is the son of the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, S. R. Bommai. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering, he started his political career with the Janata Dal.

Earlier,  BS Yediyurappa, 78,  Karnataka Chief Minister announced his resignation, CM broke down while announcing his resignation at a two-year celebration of his government today.

Mr. Yediyurappa, 78, declared in a tearful speech at the Vidhan Sabha premises and said “I have decided to resign. I will meet the Governor after lunch,”
