Bangladesh Protests: Over 70 Killed in Fresh Protest for PM Hasina’s Resignation

Dhaka: Protests in Bangladesh, initially sparked by a jobs quota system, have escalated into a broader antigovernment movement demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

At least 76 people, including 13 police officers, have been killed and dozens more injured as police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse tens of thousands of protesters. The violence occurred in Dhaka, and the northern districts of Bogura, Pabna, and Rangpur, as well as in Magura in the west, Comilla in the east, and Barisal and Feni in the south.

An attack on the Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj resulted in the deaths of 13 officers, though the attackers’ identities remain unknown.

The protests began in July with students demanding an end to the government jobs quota system and have since grown, resulting in the deaths of 200 people. Prime Minister Hasina has labeled the protesters as criminals and urged the public to respond firmly.

Authorities have blocked internet access, imposed a shoot-on-sight curfew, and arrested at least 11,000 people in recent weeks.
