Hyderabad: A week after Telangana police’s HawkEye app was hacked and user data posted online for sale, another police app, TSCOP, was infiltrated by hackers. As a result, police information is up for sale on forums online.
The Telangana police have faced a series of significant data breaches within a week, with sensitive information from their apps HawkEye and TSCOP being leaked online. This marks the third such incident after previous leaks involving the police SMS service portal and HawkEye app. Data security researcher Srinivas Kodali discovered that the hacked information, now for sale on forums like BreachForums, includes sensitive details such as criminal records, law enforcement data, police officials’ identities, and Aadhaar information.
The HawkEye app breach involved the exposure of personal details of over 200,000 users, including SOS calls from women, emails, and phone numbers. Similarly, the TSCOP app breach has exposed detailed profiles of police officers and offender records. Both apps, designed for internal use by the Telangana police and equipped with facial recognition technology, were launched in 2018 as part of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems initiative.
The leaks have sparked criticism of the Telangana police’s data handling practices, especially as the information remains available for sale online with minimal police response. An investigation by the Telangana State Cyber Security Bureau is underway.
