CBSE and Facebook to Educate Students and Teachers on Digital Safety

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday announced a partnership with Facebook to provide training about digital safety, online well-being, and training on augmented reality (AR) to students and teachers.

The training modules are for secondary school students. The curriculum is now available on the CBSE website.

The curriculum on digital safety and online well-being cover aspects such as safety, privacy, mental health, and Instagram’s guide for building healthy digital habits, Facebook said in a statement.

The module has been designed to guide students to become responsible digital users, identify and report threats and harassment as well as report misinformation.

At least 10,000 students will be covered in the training to be imparted by the Centre for Social Research (CSR).

Facebook, CBSE, and CSR will provide an online certificate of completion to students who attend a full session of either program or complete a brief assessment/feedback form.

Also, as part of the collaboration, Facebook will support CBSE in its first-ever initiative to introduce AR as a curriculum.

In the first phase, 10,000 teachers will be trained while 30,000 students will undergo the same in the second phase.

The three-week training, to be conducted in batches, will cover fundamentals of AR and ways to utilize Facebook’s software, Spark AR Studio to create augmented reality experiences.

The objective is to give the learners an opportunity and platform to conceptualize, create and brand their own AR experiences.

The hands-on learning experience of AR will help in preparing the students for a career in the digital economy.

According to the US tech giant, the teachers who successfully complete the training in the first phase will train 30,000 students in the second phase.

About Programs

This workshop, led by the training partner Centre for Social Research (CSR), will teach students to understand their digital identity and how they can become responsible digital users. We will explore the essentials of how to communicate responsibly online, how to identify and respond to threats and harassment, and the tools with which they can empower themselves to stay safe and secure online This curriculum will also enable students to explore good digital habits that can support their online well-being and keep their online experience healthy and happy. They will also explore misinformation and accountability, especially amid the pandemic, and how misinformation contributes to the spread of panic and anxiety. The program will help students differentiate various kinds of information available on digital platforms and explore options available to identity misinformation, report and reduce its spread.

Instagram Toolkit for Teens: Building Healthy Digital Habits

We want the time young people spend on Instagram to be positive, inspiring, and intentional. This toolkit is a collaboration between Instagram, The Jed Foundation (JED), and YLAC and will encourage our community to be mindful of how time online impacts their emotional wellbeing, share some tips and tools that can improve their experience, and connect you with resources for further thought and discussion. This is a toolkit for educators and parents and includes a lesson plan for a workshop that can be facilitated by educators or parents. This lesson plan will primarily cover mental and emotional well-being and will also include aspects such as bullying, hate speech, and misinformation as relevant sub-themes for the Indian context. While it is engineered to be a group activity facilitated by an educator or parent, we encourage our community to try taking some of the quizzes with a friend and talking about their results. It will help our community to decode not just images, but the emotions around them—how they feel when they are on Instagram, how they feel about content and people they come across, how they feel about what they share—and even what it feels like not to share. With that self-awareness, they can use these tools and suggestions to make informed decisions about how they use the platform.

Certification:

Facebook, CBSE, and CSR will provide an online certificate of completion to students who attend a full session of either program or complete a brief assessment/feedback form.
