8 MPs Suspended Over Uproar in Rajya Sabha including TMC’s Derek O’Brien

New Delhi: Two of the three controversial agricultural bills of the government were passed in Rajya Sabha by voice vote on Sunday amid extraordinary uproar and protests.

The third bill will be taken up in Rajya Sabha today. The opposition alleged the government did not have the numbers and there was extensive violation of rules that helped the government.

The Eight Opposition members Derek O’Brien, KK Ragesh, Dola Sen, Syed Nazir Hussain, Sanjay Singh, Rajiv Sattav, Ripun Bora and Elamaram Kareem have been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for one week for creating a ruckus on Sunday during the debate over agriculture reform Bills.

“This does not end here,” said Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien, terming it a “murder of democracy”. The opposition MPs sat in protest inside the house for a while, and later, 47 of them moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh.

Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien later tweeted, “They cheated. They broke every rule in Parliament. It was a historic day. In the worst sense of the word. They cut RSTV feed so the country could not see. They censored RSTV. Do not spread propaganda. We have evidence,”

The opposition had demanded that the bills be sent to a select committee for further discussion.
