PhD Scholar, 5 More Arrested After Forced Abortion Leads to Wife’s Death

Hyderabad: On Monday, July 1, the Suryapet police arrested a PhD scholar and five others for allegedly forcing a woman to undergo an unsafe abortion, resulting in her death.

Accused Individuals:

  • Ratnavath: PhD scholar and husband of the victim
  • Ranapangu Gopi: Technician
  • Shaik Saidulu: Technician
  • Naveen: Local practitioner
  • Dr. Qasim: Doctor at Kamala Hospital
  • Rani: Assistant during the procedure

Incident Details:

  • Marriage and Pregnancy:

Ratnavath and his wife, Suhasini, married in 2019 and had two daughters. Upon learning of her third pregnancy, Ratnavath threatened to leave Suhasini if she delivered another girl.

  • Abortion Arrangements:

A week prior to the incident, Ratnavath sought the help of Gopi and Shaik Saidulu from Vijay Hospital in Kodad, recommended by Naveen. These technicians facilitated a meeting with Guruvaiah, who confirmed on June 23 that the unborn child was a girl.

  • Abortion Procedure:

The family forcefully took Suhasini to Dr. Qasim at Kamala Hospital in Huzurnagar. Dr. Qasim, assisted by Rani, administered tablets to induce abortion and performed the procedure. Suhasini suffered severe blood loss and died while being transported to Hyderabad for emergency medical care.

Legal Action:

A case has been registered under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act. Seven individuals are allegedly involved in the case, with one still absconding. The police are conducting further investigations.
