13 Historical Darwazas (Gates) of Hyderabad

Hyderabad’s historical Darwazas (gates) were an integral part of its fortified structure, built primarily during the Qutb Shahi and later Asaf Jahi eras. These gates served as entry points to protect the city, control trade, and monitor the movement of people. Here are the notable historical gates:

The giant wooden gate at Puranapul junction in Hyderabad is one of the city’s 13 historical Darwazas (gates), built as part of a 6-mile-long wall to protect the walled city. Constructed during the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi eras, these gates included 13 main entrances and smaller khirkhis (wicked gates) for controlled access. Initially, there were 12 gates, but Afzal Darwaza was added after Nayapul Bridge was built.

The gates, made of iron and heavy wood, were manned by armed guards and closed at night, except for emergencies. Visitors could stay at nearby saraais (rest houses), remnants of which still exist near Aliabad road.

Some gates, like Dabeerpura and Puranapul, still stand tall. The wall, designed for horse patrols and equipped with Burjs (cannon towers), was built using granite and completed during the Asaf Jahi period. Today, only a few of these historic structures survive as reminders of Hyderabad’s rich past.
